What kills a pair of pliers is the jaw teeth rounding off, after which they polish bolts instead of turning them. Channellock laser-hardens the gripping edges so they keep biting for years, and the channels hold their setting under load rather than slipping a notch when you lean on the handles.
Channellock has been in Meadville, Pennsylvania since 1886 and still forges its pliers there. The name became the generic term for the tool because the company invented the design.
