Blowing out a candle sprays wax and smoke. A snuffer starves the flame instead, which is why they exist — and the handle length is the functional part, keeping a hand away from a deep jar or a hurricane glass.
Pewter does not conduct heat fast enough to make the handle uncomfortable in normal use.
