An owl is its face — the disc, the set of the eyes — and stamping flattens it. Cast pewter keeps the facial disc at a different depth from the body, which is what makes it read as an owl and not a bird shape.
Pockets do not hurt it; there is no finish to lose.
Danforth has been casting pewter in Vermont for over fifty years.
