Four by eight feet with a 17.5-inch wall in 1/2-inch Classic cedar. That is roughly double the height of a standard bed and the difference is felt in the back rather than the harvest.
The height does two jobs: it raises the working surface so planting, weeding and picking happen with far less bending, and it gives a soil column deep enough for parsnips, long carrots and potatoes without hitting the base. It takes considerably more soil to fill, which is worth planning for.
Greenes Fence has been building cedar garden structures in Ohio since 1947, working with North American timber.
