This is a slatted cedar composter with about 174 gallons of capacity in a 36-inch cube. The gaps between boards are the working part of the design — airflow through the sides keeps the pile aerobic, which is the difference between compost that breaks down and a heap that just sits and sours.
It sits directly on soil so worms and microbes reach the pile from below, and the open top takes kitchen scraps, grass clippings and autumn leaves as they come. The cedar is untreated, so nothing leaches into material you will later spread on food beds.
Greenes Fence has been building cedar garden structures in Ohio since 1947, working with North American timber.
