This is a long-format cedar composter, 48 inches across and roughly 155 gallons. The extra length is what lets you work in stages: finished material at one end, fresh scraps at the other, instead of one pile that never quite matures because you keep adding to it.
Slatted sides pull air through the mass so decomposition stays aerobic rather than turning sour and anaerobic. It sits open-bottomed on soil, so worms and microbes reach the pile from below and the finished compost lifts straight out onto the beds.
Greenes Fence has been building cedar garden structures in Ohio since 1947, working with North American timber.
