This Kettle Moraine feeder is a drilled cedar log designed so the suet plugs face downward, requiring birds to feed from the underside. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees cling and feed upside down with ease, while starlings and grackles, which cannot, are largely shut out, naturally steering the suet to the birds you want.
Hang it from a branch near cover, pack the holes with suet plugs or peanut-butter suet, and offer it through fall and winter. The cedar weathers to a soft silver and the simple log form makes refilling quick.
Kettle Moraine has built backyard bird feeders in Wisconsin for years, working in natural cedar and recycled materials made to last outdoors.
